Often when people talk about April, the phrase, April showers bring May flowers comes up. At least that is the case if you were ever in elementary school. That phrase sticks with me and I speak it into the universe every time it is raining in the month to convince myself that beautiful days are ahead. I haven't been disappointed yet.
This saying is good, but it doesn't speak to the real truth about the air in April which can often be stale and stagnant and can actually dry out your skin. It's true, spring dryness is a real thing for many people with their skin. Whether it's a carryover from not doing enough hydration in the winter or if it is due to the environmental conditions that are facing you in the month of April, this dryness condition can be damaging to your skin.
You may have had a great skincare routine for the winter months, but don't forget as the calendar turns you are going to need to adjust your routine to meet the elements. Hydration in the spring is just as important, if not more important then it is in the winter.
Here are some things you can do to make sure your skin stays hydrated.
-
Hydrate Inside and Out: Prioritize both drinking enough water throughout the day and using topical hydrating products like serums and moisturizers to combat springtime dryness.
-
Seek Out Key Hydrating Ingredients: Look for skincare formulations containing powerful humectants like hyaluronic acid and glycerin, as well as barrier-supporting ingredients such as ceramides.
-
Adjust Your Routine for Gentle Hydration: Opt for mild cleansers, layer hydrating products effectively, consider using a humidifier, and avoid long, hot showers to prevent moisture loss.
-
Treat Skin with Hydrating Masks: Incorporate hydrating face masks, especially overnight options, a few times a week for an intensive moisture boost and to replenish dry skin.
Do you need to take all of these actions to have a complete skincare routine for the spring? No, you do not. If you start with one or two of these recommendations you will be well on your way to having hydrated skin that will be looking great for the entire month of April and beyond.
One other thing you don't want to forget is that April and May give way to the steamy heat of the summer very quickly and with this happens you will need to adjust your skincare routine once again. It is important to remember that your skincare routine needs to be adjusted regularly so you do not fall trap to the changing seasons changing your skin drastically.
