There is a lot of talk in the Summer about protecting your skin from the harsh heat of the sun and the sweat that you inevitably experience when you're just moving about your day. These are things that you can combat through a well thought out and planned skincare routine. That is the good news. The even better news is that during the Summer there are foods you can eat that will help your skin even further so you are able to double up on your skin health.
Despite what the title suggests, we don't expect that you will go out and harvest your own food this Summer. However, if you do decide to partake in pick your own berries or some other farming activity we should advise you to do it with plenty of sunscreen and even to cover up in certain circumstances so you don't hurt your skin along the way. Actually, harvesting some of your own fruits and vegetables can be quite good for you and your skin if you have the ability to do so. That being said, visiting the grocery store and enjoying the fruits (no pun intended) of others labor is also a fine way to take advantage of the Summer harvest.
Next, it is important to know what types of fruits and vegetables you should be looking for to have the biggest impact on your skin. First and foremost, it is important to know that most fruits and vegetables will have a net positive impact on your skin health. While there are some that are better then others, most will give you a good opportunity to improve your skin while eating something delicious.
Some of the items you should be looking for at your local farm stand or grocery store this Summer should include;
1.) Berries. The antioxidants in berries are their super power. While berries pack a highly nutritious punch all the way through, antioxidants are a key to keeping your skin health looking all summer long. These nutrients will go a long way to repairing any damage that you've experienced from the sun and free radicals when you've been outside enjoying the weather.
2.) Watermelon. As it's name suggests watermelon is packed with, well, water. What is better for hydration of your skin then a high volume of water in your body? Nothing. Eating watermelon during the Summer is not only delicious but it will also help you take your skincare to a whole new level by allowing you to hydrate without sipping a single glass of water. That said, we do recommend daily glasses of water to continue your hydration even if you are eating watermelon.
3.) Tomatoes. Who doesn't love a ripe, juicy tomato from your local garden? It's one of the tastes of Summer and it has the added benefit of being packed with Vitamin C which is incredible for collagen production. As you may know from following this website collagen is essential to keeping your skin looking youthful and healthy all year long.
4.) Orange bell peppers: Any bell pepper color will provide the nutrients you need for healthy skin, but Orange bell peppers in particular provide a high dose of beta-carotene which will be converted into Vitamin A when inside your body. Vitamin A packs a healthy punch for your skin.
When you're headed to the grocery store or your local farm stand this Summer don't forget to grab the freshest ingredients for your salad or fruit cup AND for your skincare routine. It is important to have a good skincare routine with the proper products to keep your skin looking healthy and youthful, but these tasty fruits and vegetables should not be overlooked as crucial ingredients in your skincare journey.
