It's Your Annual Reminder About Halloween Candy And Your Skin

The little ghouls and goblins are just about to start ringing your doorbell looking for little treats to satisfy their sweet tooth for Halloween.  Have you dug into their candy yet and taken a couple of little treats for yourself?  It's ok, you can be honest, we won't tell.  Trust us, everyone does this at least a few times per Halloween.  

A little dab will do you to satisfy your sweet tooth and get you to a point where you feel like you've participated in the fun, yet silly, tradition of handing out candy to the neighbors kids.  Truthfully, a little Halloween candy, of any kind, will not damage your skin to a point where it is irreparable.  This is even more true if you are regularly committed to your skincare routine.

With that being said, if you can't just stop at one little bite of candy you should know which Halloween candies will do the least amount of damage to your skin.  You probably already know which type of candy will do the most damage to your skin, say it with me, CHOCOLATE.  The truth is that chocolate, in small doses is ok and may not cause break outs, but if you dive into a bag of Milky Way candy bars you might just wind up with a little less then ideal looking skin.

Why is chocolate so bad?

Almost all chocolate is high in sugar and sugar can contribute to inflammation throughout your body, but it can particularly affect your skin.  Of course sugar is not the only way that chocolate might affect your skin.  If you have a dairy sensitivity or other individual factors that might be impacted by chocolate you should avoid this type of candy all together.  If your skin dramatically reacts to you eating chocolate you may want to seek advice from a dermatologist about what to do.

Beyond chocolate most other candies are going to be OK for your skin if you have them in moderation.  Of course, almost all candy is high in sugar and the sugar can certainly have a significant impact on the health and well-being of your skin.  When your body is bombarded with sugars from candy it is more likely to have increased sebum production and clogged pores.  When this happens it is less then ideal for your skin.

Ultimately if you want your skin to look glowing and youthful but you can resist a sweet treat around Halloween, it's OK, go for it.  If you have been committed to your skincare routine all year long and you are only dabbling in the fine treats that come from going door to door on Halloween then you should be just fine.  

PRO TIP: If you're going to eat a little more candy then you should when you're passing it out to the little kids who are all decked out in their costumes, chase the candy down with some extra water.  It will do your skin a world of good if you are hydrating while also bombarding it with sugar.
