SPF 101: How to Choose the Right Sunscreen for Your Skin Type This Summer

When it comes to summer skincare, sunscreen isn’t just important—it’s essential. But not all sunscreens are created equal, and choosing the right one for your specific skin type can mean the difference between a breakout-free glow and a greasy, irritated mess. Let’s break down the basics of SPF and how to find your perfect match.

What Does SPF Mean?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks about 98%. While it might seem like a small difference, every bit of protection counts, especially during long days in the sun.

Mineral vs. Chemical Sunscreen
Mineral (physical) sunscreens use ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to sit on top of the skin and reflect UV rays. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays and convert them to heat.

  • Mineral: Best for sensitive skin; often less irritating.

  • Chemical: Tends to be more lightweight and cosmetically elegant.

Best Sunscreens by Skin Type:

Oily or Acne-Prone Skin:
Choose an oil-free, non-comedogenic formula. Gel-based sunscreens or those labeled “matte finish” are ideal. Look for added ingredients like niacinamide or silica to help control shine.

Dry Skin:
Opt for a moisturizing sunscreen with added emollients like hyaluronic acid, squalane, or ceramides. Cream-based formulations are usually more hydrating.

Sensitive Skin:
Mineral sunscreens are your best friend. Avoid fragrances, alcohols, and parabens. Products labeled "hypoallergenic" or "for sensitive skin" are your safest bet.

Combination Skin:
You might want a hybrid product—a lightweight lotion that hydrates without adding oil. Layer it over your usual skincare for best results.

Dark Skin Tones:
Many mineral sunscreens leave a white cast. Opt for tinted formulations or sheer chemical sunscreens that blend well without residue.

When and How to Apply
Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every two hours. Don’t forget spots like your ears, neck, and the tops of your feet!

We can't stress the importance of sunscreen enough.  If you're spending any significant time in the sun you are going to want to make sure you are diligent about applying and reapplying your sunscreen.  You'll be grateful that you did when your skin looks youthful and glowing each and every day you wake up.
