The scorching temperatures of the summer months haven't arrived, but they are coming and it is important to know how the summer heat can damage your skin and what you can do about it.
We hope at this point you've developed a really good skincare routine for the winter months and that it kept your skin looking youthful and moisturized during the winter months, but the summer is a whole other animal and it requires a new approach to your skincare.
Why does summer heat damage your skin so badly?
The first and most important reason that hot summer air is bad for your skin is that it dehydrates your skin. When you are sweating or just being in the sun and heat your skin begins to lose water and this can lead to dehydration. Hydrated skin is the most supple and beautiful skin and if you are losing too much water you may not be able to keep the glow you worked so hard to maintain over the winter months.
Heat and humidity lead to oilier skin which can be damaging for your overall skin health. On those particularly hot summer days where the humidity feels like it's turning the air into pea soup you may want to spend a little more time with your cleanser in the morning and afternoon and consider ramping up your exfoliating treatments to more then just once a week.
Being in the sun too long can start to dry out your skin and worse lead to irritation and redness, including, but not limited to a sunburn. A good first step here is of course to wear a good sunscreen while you're in direct exposure, but also once you're out of the direct sunlight a good moisturizer can help minimize the affect that the harsh summer sun may have on your skin over time.
